Obituary for Chief Msgt. Dewey Donald Vaughn, USAF Retired

Dewey Donald Vaughn, CMSGT, Ret.

July 9, 1932 – May 13, 2025

Retired Chief Master Sergeant, Dewey “Don” Vaughn passed away May 13, 2025.

Born in Greensboro, NC on July 9, 1932, Dewey was the third of four sons born to Harvey and Nellie Vaughn.

In 1951, he began his 24-year career serving his country in the United States Air Force. During his active service time, he had the opportunity to be stationed at multiple air force bases all over the world. In a newspaper article published in his hometown in 1964, his commander referred to him as “a very personable, energetic individual who possesses those rare qualities of honor, pride, humility, and intelligence that are respected by all people with whom he comes in contact.” His numerous awards demonstrate his exemplary work and dedication. He earned several medals including a bronze star.

In 1955, while stationed in Alaska, he frequented a Mexican food restaurant to play pinball. It was here he met his future wife, Ruby, whose family owned the restaurant. He and Ruby married shortly thereafter. Dewey passed away 3 days short of their 70th wedding anniversary.

After retiring from the Air Force, Dewey went on to become an operator for Tosco Oil Refinery where he worked until his final retirement.

As a young adult and throughout his military service, Dewey’s hobbies included drawing, swimming, football, and horseshoes. Later in life, Dewey’s hobbies transitioned to collecting and repairing classic cars, doing the daily crossword puzzle, and collecting and refurbishing clocks.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Vaughn; children, Janet Kelley, Geoffrey Vaughn, and Audra Vaughn; grandchildren, Krysten Vaughn, Lexie Vaughn, and Austin Lehfeldt; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family in Greensboro, NC.

Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Vaughn and Nellie Smith; brothers, Rudolph, Robert, and Jack Vaughn; and son-in-law Jeffrey Kelley.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 11am.
