Obituary for Zaida (Selk) Solinski
Zaida (Selk) Solinski, 93, of Vacaville, California peacefully passed into her Savior’s arms April 2, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born August 28, 1927 in Dysert, Iowa to George and Ida Selk. As a young teen Zaida and her family moved to a farm in La Porte City, Iowa. After graduating valedictorian from La Porte City High School in 1945, she entered the US Cadet Nurses Corp. Upon completion of her training at St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids Iowa she accepted a position as a surgical nurse in Honolulu, Hawaii where she met and married George Solinski. They were married 49 years prior to his passing in 1999. As an Air Force family they moved to various bases before being finally stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. In 1959 the family moved to Vacaville where she resided until her passing.
Zaida is survived by her four children, Suzanne (Richard) Crawford, Steven Solinski, Sandra Solinski, and Sharon (Dan) Poplin; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister and brother, Charlene Cole of Virginia and brother George Selk of Iowa.
Zaida was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandma, and “GG” (great grandma). Her family holds in their hearts innumerable memories of her warm and inviting nature, her witty sense of humor, and her abundant love for her family. She truly had the heart of a servant and found her greatest joy in helping and giving to others.
After becoming the mother of a child with cerebral palsy, Zaida helped with one of the first organizations in the area to support families of children with disabilities, providing social and recreational opportunities for physically challenged children in the early 1970s.
Zaida was also known as a talented seamstress, and could often be found sitting at her sewing machine lovingly making something for one of her children, grandchildren, or anyone in need of her sewing skills.
While Zaida was an exceptional mother, her absolute joy came in becoming a grandmother and then a great grandmother. Everyone was always welcome at GG’s house where a visit always included witty conversation, a cookie, some hand holding, and hug before you left.
Zaida was a woman of strong faith and passed that on to her family. She was a member of Crossroads Christian Church in Vacaville where, years ago, using her skills as a seamstress, she helped construct many of the costumes used yearly in the live Nativity play for Vacaville’s Merriment on Main. She was also active in the Prime Timers senior ministry at church until becoming limited by health issues over the last few years.
Outside of her family, Zaida counted her many deep and abiding friendships as some of the greatest blessings in her life. She had the ability to make and keep many lifelong friendships. She made a point of keeping in close contact with her entire nursing class of 1948 and continued to meet routinely for reunions until health issues forced visits by just phone and letters.
Zaida will be deeply missed by her entire family and her many, many friends. There is joy in knowing she is at peace in the presence of her Lord and with those she has loved who have gone before.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11 o’clock at Crossroads Christian Church in Vacaville California. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any Hospice organization of your choice, Game Changers ministry through Crossroads Christian Church, or Play4All Parks in Vacaville (an adapted playground for children with physical disabilities).
