Obituary for Yoshiko Furukawa Mayes
Longtime Vacaville resident Yoshiko Mayes passed away on Monday, Feb. 8, with her family gathered around her. Yoshiko was born and raised in Sasebo, Japan, on the island of Kyushu. In 1958, she met and married the love of her life George Ellis Mayes, an American serviceman who at the time was stationed at Itazuke Air Base in Fukuoka, Japan. In 1965, Yoshiko, with her young sons George Jr. and Eddie in tow, traveled from Japan to San Francisco aboard the SS Cleveland. The journey took two weeks with a stopover in Hawaii. After their arrival in San Francisco, the Mayes family settled in Vallejo where twins Stacey and Tracy were born. Yoshiko lived the remainder of her life in Solano County. Yoshiko was employed at David Grant Medical Center and she provided childcare for families in Vacaville. Yoshiko is survived by her four sons and their families which include her grandchildren, Georgie, Ty, Samantha, Cheyenne, Dante, Eddie Jr. and Anali. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and her grandson, Marcus. Bachaan, as her grandchildren called her, gave tirelessly to her family. She loved bingo, traveling to Cache Creek and visiting with her Japanese friends. We will miss her dearly. Viewing will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville. Services will be held on Friday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. also at McCune Garden Chapel
