Obituary for William Leon 'Bill' Jones
William Leon “Bill” Jones passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, after an extended illness on November 18, 2013. Bill was born in Rahway, NJ on April 3, 1947 to Edith and Hayward Jones. As a young child, his family settled in Cambridge, MD. Bill graduated from Cambridge High school in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. He specialized in aircraft avionics. Bill served two tours in the Vietnam War. During his time in the Air Force he was stationed all over the world. He met Kathleen McDonald while stationed in Madrid, Spain. They married in 1972. Bill was assigned to the 60th Avionics Maintenance Squadron at Travis AFB as an Avionics Flight Line Superintendent in 1980. Bill loved the area and he and his family settled in Dixon in 1981. Bill retired from the Air Force in 1985 at the rank of Master Sergeant. After he retired from the Air Force he managed the Aero Clubs at McClellan AFB and Travis AFB for several years. When he started working at the Travis Aero Club he was quoted in a newspaper article saying “my future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses”. In 1996 Bill landed his dream job as an International Flight Safety Inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration. This job allowed him to travel to Australia, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong. He retired from the FAA in 2010. In addition to his hard work, Bill was involved in the Dixon Community Theatre, the Lions Club and the Dixon Dolphins Swim Team. Bill was a certified flight instructor, instrument, multi-engine and ground instructor. He held a private pilot’s license for many years. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Kathleen of Dixon, daughter Erin and son-in-law James Tyler of Oklahoma City, daughter Emily and granddaughter Jemma Dubach of Dixon and lifelong best friend Philip and wife Diana Jackson of Cambridge, MD. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Hayward and Edith Jones, sister Jessie Jones and brother John Paul Jones. A service celebrating Bill’s life will be on Monday, December 2nd from 3:00-5:00pm at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, we know Bill would be honored if you would make a donation to Toys for Tots of Dixon, CA. Bill was a hard working, honest and very generous man. His family and friends will miss his beautiful smile, great laugh and warm heart.
