Obituary for Susan Tong
Susan Tong of Vacaville, California, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 13, while surrounded by her family. She was 81 years old.
Susan was born on June 19, 1928 in Ay Toi, Toisan County, Guangdong Province, China. She endured the Chinese-Japanese War and the Communist Revolution. After receiving her high school degree, Susan married David, her husband of 62 years. They lived briefly in the neighboring town of Cheiu Gaing with Davids extended family. On July 24, 1949, they had their first son, Calvin.
On April 1, 1952, Susan immigrated with her son to the United States, joining David who had settled in Napa, California. There, she worked at her father-in-laws laundry business. In 1953, David and Susan had their second son, Irving, but he died after just two months. The family relocated to Fairfield, California and Susan gave birth to five more sons, Allen, Phillip, Leland, Alvin, and Clifton from 1954-1962. She worked endlessly to raise her six sons while David was working long hours in the grocery business.
In June 1964, the family moved to Vacaville, California. Susan continued her dedication to the family while David managed the successful Vacaville Grocery. In the late 70s, she was part-owner and operator of the Moon Palace Restaurant.
She enjoyed all aspects of raising her sons such as attending parent-teacher conferences and junior high, high school, and university graduations. She was a major part of all family celebrations including birthdays, the arrival of grandchildren, and other special family occasions. She enjoyed preparing all kinds of foods, especially traditional family recipes, for family and friends.
Throughout her life, Susans thoughts were about her family and friends even until her last breath. She loved being at events with her family including an annual vacation to Lake Tahoe.
Susan is survived by a brother, Cherk Yee; husband, David; six sons; six daughters-in-law - Gail, Tina, Louise, Shelly, Pam and Linda; and 17 grandchildren -Ryan, Stephanie, Bethany, Jordan, Micah, Andy, Emily, Christina, Melissa, Michael, Lauren, Jennifer, Kimberly, Danielle, Caroline, Marcus and Evangeline.
She was an exceptionally loving, caring, proud, wise, and hard-working lady. Susan was a supportive friend to many, but only a few of us on this earth had the good fortune to have her love as the pillar of family. She will be missed very much.
A service to honor and celebrate Susans life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 19th, at the McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville, California, followed by a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the David and Susan Tong Memorial Scholarship Fund (c/o USBank, 367 Merchant Street, Vacaville, CA 95688 or any USBank) which will be used to recognize high achieving graduating seniors from Vacaville High School.
