Obituary for Steven Samuel Green
Steven Samuel Green was born on August 16, 1956 at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco to Allen and Bertha Green. He was the second of three children. At an early age Steven was a fierce competitor who wanted to win no matter what he was playing. Whether it was Words with Friends, checkers with his cousin Courtney, Monopoly with his friend Harold or strikeout with his friend Timmy; he would play to win. That competitive drive helped him to succeed in the classroom as well as on the field. Steven’s organized sports career began at Aptos Jr. High in San Francisco where he exceled in basketball; in the 7th grade he was already 6’ 1”! By the time he reached high school at Lowell he was 6’ 5” 240 pounds. At Lowell he played basketball but football would be his sport of choice. He played two years at the varsity level and was a two-way starter, on defense he played tackle and on offensive he played guard. He performed so well that he was recruited by a number of colleges but decided to attend the University of California, Davis. He graduated with a degree in History. Upon graduating he worked for his former college football coach Jim Sochor as an assistant coach. In 1979, Tom Zunino hired Steven to coach the Vacaville High School Jr. Varsity Football team. Steven coached and taught at Vacaville High for over 33 years. Being an avid fan of many sports he not only coach football he also was an active coach for the track and field team. In the position of Dean of Freshman Students), Steve did not except anything but the best effort from his students. Steven was not only noted for his coaching and teaching but he had a special gift of bringing excitement to any crowd. There are countless occasions where Steven would bring a crowd to their feet in cheers for a Vacaville sports team, his famous cheer of “Who Ya Rooting For!” will never be forgotten. Steven would not only lead a cheer on the home court he would do it at an opposing court as well. Former Hogan High School Basketball Coach, Foster Hicks is quoted as saying on one occasion at the Hogan gym, “Who is this man coming into my gym stirring up the crowd?” Steven was a very passionate man, he was passionate about sports and education but what was most dear to him was his faith in his savior, The Lord Jesus. Steven gave his heart to Jesus in his late 20’s and if you ever met Steven you know that whatever he gave his heart to he gave 100%. For over 8 years he led praise and worship in Vallejo at Life Temple where his brother Phillip Green pastored. From there he became a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist in Vacaville. At Shiloh, Steven became a part of the Men’s Chorus and Men’s Ministry where he participated in many performances. Those who preceded him in death are his mother (Bertha), father (Allen) and brother (Keith). Steven leaves to cherish his memory his brother Ezra Phillip Green (Ola), sister in law Barbara, nieces Aimee (Tommy), Nicole (Rob), Kimberly (Hugo), and Porsché; nephews Stacy (Trameca) and Michael; Godson Marcus, a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins and long-time girlfriend Jackie Gibbons
