Born in the Suisun Valley to Cyril and Hazel (Young) Groulx, Silas attended Dover School in Fairfield until the family moved to Vacaville where he resided until his passing. Silas was drafted into the army while attending Vacaville High School. He was sent to Fort Ord for basic training, he completed his training in Maryland and was en-route to Europe when the war ended. Silas was then sent to Texas to train for the pacific and was heading for the west coast when the Japanese surrendered. He ended up serving two years with 170th Combat Engineers in pre-war Korea. Upon returning home Silas met his bride-to-be, Mary Johnson. They were married on May 22, 1949. Silas and Mary raised their three children in Vacaville; Paula, Cynthia and Michael. Silas was a union carpenter for 18 years and had his own construction company for 15 years. Silas was instrumental in the construction of 5 schools throughout California. He was the Superintendent and Carpenters Foreman for Pagni Construction on the building of Vanden High School. His construction company is responsible for building the KUIC studio (which was housed in the Cal Hawaii building) renovation of the ranch house on the Larson Horse Ranch and the first home in Vacaville with an indoor swimming pool, to name just a few of his accomplishments. In retirement Silas was proud to have served on the Grand Jury in the Uni-Bomber case. Silas was preceded in death by his parents; Cyril and Hazel; his brother, Masse; his daughters, Paula Bessex and Cynthia Cavins. He is survived by his son, Michael, brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Maryanne; grandchildren, Michelle (Bessex) Stieber, Eric Bessex, Brandy Byers, Kevin McDaniel, Jennifer (Groulx) Calvin, Thomas Byers; nine great-grandchildren and by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary.
