Obituary for Shelby 'Gene' Farrow, Sr.
Shelby Farrow, Sr., 74, of Vacaville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24 in Vallejo, Ca. after a brief battle with lung cancer. Shelby was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois to John Shelby Farrow and Margaret Mary Etter. Nine days after his 17th birthday, Shelby joined the United States Navy serving as a Hospital Corpsman, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1974. Ten of his 20 years were in the submarine service. In 1974, Shelby began his 2nd career with the California Department of Corrections where he worked as a Medical Technical Assistant, Senior Medical Technical Assistant and Health Program Coordinator at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville. Mr. Farrow also dedicated many years to the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), serving as both CMF MTA Chapter President and CCPOA State Vice President. He retired from state service in 2007 and worked another year as a retired annuitant before going home to relax in April of 2008. Shelby is survived by his wife, Marge, son, Shelby, Jr. of Vacaville and sister, Mary Loyet of Collinsville, Illinois.
Cemetery: Burial with full military honors will follow the service at 1:00 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may remember him through a donation to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or any of the various lung cancer foundations.
Service: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, at McCune Garden Chapel,
