Faith: The Catholic Church was an important part of Ruth Rita’s life. She attended St. Peter’s church in Dixon, CA, and St. Mary’s Church in Vacaville prior to that. She also supported the community via her volunteer efforts with the Young Ladies Institute. YLI is an organization of Catholic Women dedicated to the Christian principles of charity and Love.
Family: Ruth Rita shined at most of her endeavors, but supporting the family was among her highest priorities in life. She married at 21 and started a family with an Air Force man (Franklin Curtis Nelson). Ruth Rita and Frank were moved around in service of our country like most military families. At each new stop, they worked hard to forge their way in life, they made lots of friends, traveled frequently and had three children together. Ruth Rita worked mostly part-time as a RN and full-time as a mom.
Business: In 1975 Franklin retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service. He and Ruth Rita started a service business repairing Mobile Homes in Vacaville CA. Ruth Rita would help with many aspects of the operation, and they successfully ran that business together for over 20 years.
Dogs: The 70s 80s and 90s were the decade of the dogs for Franklin and Ruth Rita Nelson. They both became breeders and exhibitors of show dogs. They raised several champions in breeds from Dalmatians to Chow Chows and enjoyed traveling in their motorhome, visiting family and friends, and attending dog shows across the country. Ruth Rita and Franklin were on the board of the Chief Solano Kennel Club and helped plan shows and events with the organization.
Genealogy: Ruth Rita was a member of the Solano County Genealogical Society and volunteered helping community members research their histories. She spent many years building her own family history and worked extensively with the Rappahannock Tribe of Virginia researching their genealogy and building the family history of her late husband Franklin Curtis Nelson. Her work assisted the tribe in obtaining Federal Recognition as a Sovereign Tribe in Virginia in 2018.
