Obituary for Ruth Petersen
Ruth Adeline (Hitchcock) Petersen was born in Santa Barbara, California, on November 18, 1916, to Francis Eugene and Marguerite Katherine (Misfeldt) Hitchcock, when her father was in the Coast Guard Lighthouse service. She passed away peacefully on March 26, 2013. Her mother was a native of Dixon, the daughter of Jacob and Adelena (Prien) Misfeldt, who moved to Dixon from Iowa in 1879 and bought a house that had been moved from Silveyville (rolled on logs) which is still a residence on the corner of Jackson & Broadway. Jacob had a saloon in the old Farmers¹ Exchange site, which later was a carpenter shop for Ruth¹s father. Ruth grew up in Dixon and attended Dixon schools. She was a telephone operator in Dixon when a switchboard was answered by an operator and calls were connected by a real person. She later was a bookkeeper for the Chrysler dealership in Dixon and also worked for many years for Art Woodman Insurance Agency. In 1937 she married Norman Terry Petersen, also of Dixon. She was first and always a wife and homemaker . She loved to garden and had a large rose garden of many beautiful rose bushes. In 1941, Norman joined the California Highway Patrol and Ruth became a full time wife and mother. Ruth and a group of Highway Patrol wives met as friends and then formed the first Highway Patrol Wives Club in Solano County, where Ruth was a Past President. They did charitable work and raised money for the Widows and Orphans Fund and also scholarships. About 1948 Norm bought 10 acres of almonds west of town and remodeled an old two story barn in to a great home, so she became a farmers¹ wife too. In 1960, they moved to Napa and in retirement she and Norm loved to travel with friends to many wonderful destinations in their travel trailer. And had many good times on the water in their cabin cruiser. After Norm passed away in 1998, Ruth continued to live in Napa but moved to Fairfield in 2005 to be closer to her family. She was predeceased by her sister, Cynthia (Jean) and is survived by her daughter, Norma Rogers of Vacaville, grandson Terry Rogers of Fairfield and granddaughter Tammie Rogers of Sonoma; three great grandchildren, Jenny Lee Wilder, Josh Rogers and Jeremy Rogers all of Fairfield; and four great great grandchildren Ashton, Aurora, Logan and Wyatt also of Fairfield. Services will be held at Carpenters Funeral Home in Dixon at 1 pm on March 29, 2013, with private services for the family at the Silveyville Cemetery following. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the California Highway Patrol Widows and Orphans Fund or the charity of your choice.
