Obituary for Roy Hugh Winkelman
Roy Winkelman was born March 7, 1925 in Gold Hill, Oregon. He graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1943. He served for 33 months in the US Navy, 22 of which were in the South Pacific during World War II.
He married Phyllis Jansen who passed away in 1991. They had 3 sons – Ed (who preceded him in death), John, & Don (known by most people as Jed). Those sons gave them 11 grandchildren who in turn gave him 26 great grandchildren. In 1995, he met and married Mattie Parish who had 2 daughters and 2 sons, 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. Mattie was a great blessing to his life and the lives of everyone in his family. In total they shared 7 children, 18 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, & 3 great-great grandchildren.
Roy was a Missionary Baptist for 66 years and a licensed minister. His faith in God was the most important thing in his life and we know that through accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior, he is in heaven with the Lord and that brings great comfort to all who know him. During his lifetime, he was involved in many activities. He and his first wife Phyllis were foster parents to several girls for many years and they still call him dad to this day.
He retired from Challenge Cook Brothers where he supervised the parts department for many years and implemented procedures to streamline their work process. He was greatly admired by all who worked with him.
He is survived by his wonderful wife Mattie, his sons, John and Jed, his son’s spouses, Mattie’s children and their spouses, a host of grandchildren, foster daughters, and a multitude of friends.
