Obituary for Roger C. Vanderfin
Roger Clarence Vanderfin died on July 22, 2016, in Vacaville, California, from complications due to cancer. He was 83 years old. His family was with him when he died. Roger was born on April 21, 1933, and grew up in Marinette, Wisconsin. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1951. Roger was married to Marilyn Lois Hagemeier on November 28, 1953, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Roger left home to join the United States Air Force in 1952, and served for the next 27 years. He achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts. As a member of the 60th Air Mobility Command unit, Roger helped to airlift troops and cargo around the world. During the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s, Roger was stationed across the country in New Mexico, Illinois, Delaware, Oklahoma, and California. He also served tours of duty in Greenland, Central Africa, Japan, and Vietnam. Roger was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vacaville. He was active with the Knights of Columbus, serving one year as Grand Knight. He enjoyed organizing pancake breakfasts, barbeques, and special events for parishioners and members of the community. He was proud to have helped his fellow knights remove, re-stain, and replace the pews in the church. Upon retirement, Roger enjoyed boating on the Sacramento River and Delta sloughs. He was a member of the Solano Yacht Club and served as Commodore. Roger was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Veronica (Beaudo) Vanderfin, his brothers Don, Gary, and Dale, and his sister Karen. Roger is survived by his wife Marilyn of Vacaville; his son Bernard (Mairead) Vanderfin of Camarillo; his daughters Lisa and Jeanne Vanderfin of Vacaville, and Theresa (Mike) Travaglini of Vacaville; his five grandchildren Garrick, Desmond, and Hank Vanderfin and Nicholas and Rebecca Travaglini; and his two sisters Faith Blalock of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Judy (Fred) Tauriello of Sodus Point, New York. Visitation hours will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., with a rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 27, at McCune Chapel, 212 Main Street, Vacaville. There will be a mass by Father Michael McFadden, at St. Mary’s Church, 350 Stinson Avenue, Vacaville, on Thursday, July 28, at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
