Obituary for Robert J. Cooney
Robert “Bob” was born to John Cooney and Bridget O’Connor on March 5, 1928 in St. Clair County, Pennsylvania. He was one of five boys. Bob passed away peacefully in his home after a two year battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He was cared for and loved by his children right up to his last breath. He is preceded in death by Emma, his wife of over 51 years and brothers, Vincent, William and Joseph. He is survived by his children, Kathleen Cooney, Gabrielle Cooney, Maureen Bothun (Dave) all of Vacaville and Stephen Cooney of Louisiana; brother, Dave (Hilda) of Gilbertsville, PA and sister-in-law, Rose D’Amore of East Boston, MA. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews that loved him and will miss him greatly. Bob served his country for over 22 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. One of his most memorable jobs was serving as security at the Kennedy Compound for President Kennedy and his family. He also worked for the Treasury Department and his most recent employment was with Valley Church in Vacaville where he spent 10 wonderful years. He has been a member of Valley Church for over 27 years and made many lasting friendships and spent some time singing in the church choir as well as participating in many of the shows the worship team put on. His favorite pastime was watching sports with his family, especially when his favorite teams were on. Though he grew up outside Philidelphia, he was a diehard Boston fan, something he got from his beloved Emma. Reading and working in his yard always brought him peace. Robert (Uncle Bobby, Papa) will be missed by many, but will forever live on in our hearts. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 13 from 5-8PM at McCune Garden Chapel. Graveside services will be Thursday, June 14th at 1:30 at Vacaville Elmira Cemetery with a Memorial to follow at Valley Church at 3PM. .
