Obituary for Mildred Lucille (Hartman) Rainey
Mildred Lucille (Hartman) Rainey, 85, was called home to rest on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Aug. 12, 1925, to Ruth and George Hartman in Salem, Neb. Losing her father early in life, she was raised by Uncle Louis and Aunt Lula Hartman. She graduated in the class of 1943 from Grand Island High School, and maintained friendships from childhood throughout her life. She trained as a nurse during World War II in Omaha, where she met and married Staff Sgt. John Hugh Rainey on Dec. 29, 1946. To this union was born daughter Susan in 1947. This marriage would endure 63 years until his death in January.
After John's retirement from the U.S. Air Force, the Rainey family moved to Fairfield in 1958, where John took a position as a civilian procurement officer at Travis AFB. Mildred worked as an accounting clerk, and together, with other families in the area, they founded the Upper Solano Association for Retarded Citizens. This group later merged with Pace Solano, an alliance that provides programs and services for several hundred disabled residents in the area. The organization recently celebrated 50 years of services to the community, at which John and Mildred were duly recognized as founding members.
After retirement from the civil service, the Raineys moved to Vacaville, where they lived for the past 21 years. They enjoyed traveling, family visits and remained active in the 489th Bomb Group Association of the 8th Army Air Force, participating in reunions throughout the States and England.
Mildred was an active member of the Christian Church of Vacaville for many years. She will be dearly missed by members of the congregation, her family in Christ.
She leaves daughter Susan of Vacaville, brother John Hartman of Kansas City, niece Judy Thone of Apple Valley, Minn., nephews Robert Hartman of San Diego, Donald Barnes of Fort Worth, Texas, and James Hartman of Lenexa, Kan. Also mourning her passing are many cousins, friends, neighbors, associates and parishioners.
Memorial services are pending and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Christian Church of Vacaville, Pace Solano, or Hospice of Solano County.
