Obituary for Max Downey

Max Downey passed away on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 2023. He was 85 years old.

Max was born in North Carolina and raised in the (then) town of Shelby. Bucking the usual path of working at the Lily Mill textile plant after graduating from high school, Max enlisted in the Air Force. During his 20-year Air Force career, he was stationed in Minnesota, Nebraska, Delaware, Alabama, as well as Japan, where he met his wife, Hiroko. While in the service, his wife encouraged him to pursue his education, resulting in Max being one of the few enlisted airmen with a bachelor’s degree and an MBA. He retired from the Air Force at the ripe old age of 38.

Shortly thereafter, Max joined the Air Force Audit Agency. Though a civilian, his new career prompted him to move just as much as he had when he was in the military. After living in Delaware (again), Virginia, Hawaii, and California, he retired again in 1996 in Dixon, California.

As anyone who had met him knows, Max was a people person. He could effortlessly talk to anybody and instantly put them at ease, which had undoubtedly helped him excel at his careers as well as court his wife. Max was also a voracious reader, as evidenced by the crammed bookshelves lining the walls of his home. After his second retirement, Max got into creating fun, personal websites for himself and his online friends. And during the final years of his life, Max enjoyed singing karaoke.

Max leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Hiroko, and his son, David.
