Obituary for Mary G. Foster
Mary Paolini Foster, passed away on April 5, 2017 at the age of 95 years old. She was born in Elmira, CA on June 24, 1921 to Pierina and Fabrizzio Paolini, both Italian immigrants and was the oldest daughter of the 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Her family eventually moved into Vacaville’s city limits where she attended and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1939. She excelled in sports and this was quite the achievement for a woman in the 1930’s. After high school, Mary worked at C & H Sugar, and later at the BX on Travis Air Force Base. After the WWII, she met her late husband John Foster of Sparta, Georgia, who was stationed at Travis AFB. They married in 1947, first lived in the “Units” as so many Vacaville couples did. In 1955, they bought a house on Grape Street, that is where she lived the rest of her life. Mary retired from Basic Vegetable in 1984. In retirement Mary looked after her nine grandchildren as they attended schools only blocks from her home. She prided herself on taking care of her family, making her famous spaghetti sauce, lasagna and homemade “Gnocchi” soup. She enjoyed visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She was an avid Cub’s Fan and lived to see them win the World Series last year. The “W” Flag was hanging proudly at her house that week. She was a member of the Basic Founders Club and regularly attended her monthly luncheons and was a regular customer at the lottery counter at Lucky’s on Monte Vista where she would cash in and buy scratchers. All the employees there considered her family. Mary eventually won a $20,000 jackpot on a $2 holiday scratcher that she was given as a gift by her grandkids for Christmas one year. Mary is survived by her children, Sandy Esparza (David), Nancy(Donald) Vasquez, and David Foster; grandchildren, Olivia Esparza, Donny Vasquez, Gabe Esparza, Chris Vasquez, Carla Wroten, Andrea Kamman, Christina Vargas, Lake Painter, Kevin Vasquez and by many great grandchildren.
