Obituary for Margaret "Peg" Casey Power
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our Mother, Margaret “Peg” Casey Power; she passed surrounded by family in a room filled with peace, light and love. Peg was mother to six children, grandmother to nine, great grandmother to one, sister to four, aunt to 18 and friend to more than we can count. Born to an Irish immigrant family that educated their young, worked hard, complained little and accomplished much, she always had a smile and found the best in everyone, advising all, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” Peg was a true San Franciscan, born there in 1928. Although she traveled the world and settled in Nut Tree, California, a piece of her heart was always in “The City.” In 1949, a month after graduating from San Francisco College for Women, she married Robert “Bob” H. Power of Nut Tree, California. With Bob she moved to their first home in Vacaville, California, where she taught school until her first of six children was born. Her commitment to education never wavered; she served on two school boards and was a founding member of Notre Dame Catholic School in Vacaville, California. In 1969 Peg was invited to join a woman’s group called American Women for Understanding. This group reached out to women around the world—often being the first to bridge formal ties. Her initial trip in 1969 was to Russia to meet the first female cosmonaut. Perhaps her most memorable trip was to China, just three years after relations had been re-established with the US--she was one of only 2,000 Americans given visas at that time. Throughout her lifetime Peg traveled to 99 countries including Yemen, Vietnam, Iran and Oman. Gracious to a fault, Peg collected sun motifs, loved Lilies of the Valley and was always fashionably dressed, adorned with a piece of jewelry or a scarf. She loved Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and chocolate milk shakes. Most recently she could be found sipping these shakes in the Café at Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield, where she lived since 2011. Memories bring us great solace in times of loss; as her children, Diane Zimmerman, Mark Power, Linda Holden, Julie Pantiskas, John Power and Brian Power—we will forever cherish her guiding light. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at McCune Garden Chapel, Vacaville. The family will gather for an Irish farewell at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Vacaville. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Margaret Power Scholarship Fund at the Notre Dame School, 1781 Marshall Road, Vacaville, CA 95687.
