Obituary for Marcelline H. Abrego Blake
Sixth Generation Californian Marcelline (Marcie as she was affectionately known) passed peacefully at her home in Vacaville, California on July 3, 2013 at the age of 94. She was born January 18, 1919 in San Mateo, CA to Alfonso L. Abrego and Harriet Stanley Abrego. Her great grandfather, Don Jose Abrego, came with the Hijar-Padres Colonists sent by the Mexican government to help settle early California. He settled in Monterey and was influential in its development. Her great grandmother’s family goes back to a military solider who came with Father Serra to help further the mission’s expansion by the Spanish. Her early years were spent at the Santa Cruz and La Jolla Country Clubs managed by her mother and golf professional father. He taught her to play golf; the beginnings of Junior golf in California. During these years she was signed to an acting contract and appeared in the movie Thunder Mountain, directed by Victor Shirtzinger, and stared Za-Zu Pitts, Madge Belamy and Leslie Fenton. She attended Hollywood High School and married John H. Blake Sr. Together they raised three children through the end of the Great Depression and World War 2 – all the while going to Beauty School and working with her her parents at the Presidio Hills Golf Course in Old Town, San Diego. She was owner and manager of Marcelline’s Beauty Salon in Richmond, CA. She worked as a receptionist with the San Francisco Visitors and Convention Bureau and the City of San Mateo. After retirement she played golf and decided to pursue her interest in early California history. She joined the Daughters of the American Revolution, Society of California Pioneers, and Los Californianos. She volunteered as docent for California State Parks and participated in many historical events. Much of her time was spent in research and was proud of the many books she created with the information collected. The California State Library and the Library of Congress are recipients of her work. Music was always in her life. She played the guitar and the organ. She was a member of the Blue Pacific Strings and spent many hours playing just for fun. She was an artist and painter of California landscapes. Crocheting was another favorite activity. She is proceeded in death by her ex-husband John H. Blake Sr., her daughter Joan Blake Tomlinson and grandson John D. Tomlinson. She is survived by her son John H. Blake Jr., daughter Gloria Blake Smith (Jim) many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Service: A family service and interment will be held at the Catholic Cemetery in Monterey, California
