Lois Amelia Simmons
1928 – 2026
Lois A. Simmons, a devoted mother, community leader, business owner, volunteer, and lifelong scholar, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, in Vacaville, California, at the age of 98.
Originally from Illinois, Lois built a life defined by service, curiosity, and determination. She married in 1954 and soon after earned her bachelor's degree. After early work at federal agencies in Illinois, she moved to California in the late 1960s, where she became deeply rooted in the Vacaville community.
A true “Renaissance Woman,” Lois’s professional life spanned education, business, and public service. Shortly after moving to Vacaville, she shared her love of learning as a teacher at Holy Spirit School. She also taught preparatory courses for enlisted military families – reflecting her lifelong commitment to education and opportunity. She co-founded and was President of Wes Los Recreations and co-owned several local service businesses. During her retirement, she followed her passion for the arts, serving the community through part-time work with Live Music Center in Vacaville.
Lois’s civic involvement was equally remarkable. She served in leadership roles with the Vacaville Library Commission, the Saturday Club, and Soroptimist International of Vacaville. She broke ground as the first person to establish an RV and Sports Show at Alamo Plaza, she supported programs at Travis Air Force Base–including the USO Advisory Board, the Travis USO Benefit Golf Tournament, and the American Red Cross Gray ladies. She contributed to numerous other community events and charitable organizations. Known locally and by family and friends as the “Volunteer Extraordinaire", she was widely known for her energy, generosity, and unwavering dedication to local causes.
Her personal life was rich with adventure and curiosity. Lois traveled widely, studied languages, and pursued interests ranging from bridge and antique clock collecting to tennis and racquetball. She even completed a solo flight while working toward her private pilot’s license. Above all, she cherished her family and the experiences they shared around the world.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her former husband, Charles, Sr. She is survived by her children—Charles, Estella, Rusty, Michael, and Suzanne—along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who carry forward her legacy of resilience, humor, and service.
Details regarding a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
