Obituary for Lawrence A. Ryan, Rev. M.A., Ph.D.
Lawrence A. Ryan, went to God Jan. 19. He was born March 30, 1916 in St. Paul, Minn., fourth son and seventh child of James and Mary Ellen Ryan. Attended St. Patrick's seminaries; North American College of Gregorian University, Rome, Italy. Ordained 1942. Enrolled Catholic University, Washington, D.C., master's degree English. Taught at Serra High School, San Mateo and Marin Catholic High School (1946-51). Appointed assistant superintendent high schools San Francisco Archdiocese 1951; completed work on doctorate Stanford 1955. Principal, Marin Catholic High School (1955-1959), where he taught English to two future Pulitzer winners: Robert Hass, future poet laureate of the United States, and pianist David del Traduce; Pulitzer for music. Rev. Ryan served at St. Mary's Church, Vacaville, 1959-82. In retirement, cultivated roses, played golf, painted, Santa Cruz (1982-2002), then Sacramento, where researched and wrote a retirement guide, “Graceful Aging,” that was presented to parishioners in several parishes. Last surviving member of family that included sisters Mary Catherine (Sheehan) and Alice Elinor (Ashton), of nieces, nephews and nieces.
