Larry Calahan 'Reflections'
Larry Kemble Callahan was born September 21, 1937 in Fort Worth, TX, to Joseph and Clifford Callahan. Both parents and grandson, Carland Duker Allen, preceded him in death. He grew up in San Francisco and moved to Portland, OR. graduating from Washington High School. He received both a BA and MS degrees in Criminal Justice and Social Work from California State University, Sacramento.
His professional career included working as an Analyst for the Dept. of Social Services; Psychiatric Social Worker at Napa State Hospital; Executive Director at Creative Careers, Inc.; Teaching Assistant in Criminal Justice at CSUS; Counselor & Group Coordinator at Lincoln Christian Center.
He served as the first African American President for the American Baptist Men USA. While being in this position, he preached throughout the United States and bridged the gap of racial reconciliation for men (the ABWomen adored him also). In carrying out his discipleship mandate and displaying his love for God and others, he was recognized for his service in kingdom building though American Baptist Churches of the West, USA, and Antioch Progressive Church (APC). He also served as a local and regional President for ABMen. Until his illness, he served on the ABMen Executive Board.
As one of the Founders and member of APC, he served in numerous positions including Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, and Antioch Leadership Team Leader.
He had a passion for in-home bible study where he, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, started and taught small groups for over ten years. Larry was a devout student of Gods Word and attended Trinity Theological Seminary. He also had a passion for singing and sung with the Sons of Thunder, Angelic Host, and the Sacramento Community Choir. He was also a Worship Leader with the American Baptist Men USA in Wisconsin.
He received numerous honors and certificates for his community contributions including working with the youth.
Larrys hobbies included reading, sports and fishing.
Larry is survived by his wife, Fay Callahan; daughter, Denise Callahan of Portland; sons, Kareem Callahan of Sacramento, and Cameron Morrow (Nakia) of Las Vegas; granddaughter, Shalanda Sims (Shawnte) of Portland; grandson, Donte Morrow of Las Vegas; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Isaiah, Syairah Sims of Portland; stepfather, Murray Jackson (Elsie) of Portland; sisters, Joann Callahan of Norcross, GA, Janice Jennings, brother, Wendall Jackson (Diana) of Portland; precious aunts, Rosie Lee White and Ethel Mae Russell (Percy) of Vacaville; uncle, Alonzo Williams (Barbara) of San Francisco; a guardian angel/cousin, Alvin White of Vacaville; a loving goddaughter, Shari Kreier of Sacramento, and a host of relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 9th at 12:00pm in McCune Garden Chapel.
