Obituary for Karl Thomas Spangler
Karl Thomas Spangler passed away in Woodland, Calif., on the afternoon of Jan. 9, with his daughter and son-in-law at his bedside. He was 97 years old, just three weeks shy of another birthday. He was born on Jan. 29, 1915 in Chico, Calif. He grew up in Chico and on the Butte County mountain property of his family's sawmill. Karl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Guenivere; his two brothers, Raymond and William; his stepson, Thomas Allen; and his nephew, James Spangler. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Ginger and Robert Emerson; his sister-in-law, Merle LaVerne Witt; his step-granddaughter and her children and grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces and their families. Karl moved to Dixon in 1936 at the age of 21 to work for his aunt and uncle, Caroline and Fred Hutton, at the Dixon Lumberyard. Shortly after moving to Dixon he joined the Dixon Fire Department and served his community as a volunteer fireman for many years. In the mid 1950's he left the lumberyard to become a skilled carpenter, his trade until his retirement in 1980. He was also a member of the Redman Lodge. His wife, Guenivere, was a native of Dixon. Together they happily raised her son and their daughter at the home they built and where Karl continued to reside until his death. Karl's sharp mind never failed him and his vibrancy only very recently faded. His concerns were always for his loved ones, even in his final days. He is deeply mourned by his family and will be missed by all those who were blessed to truly know him.
