Obituary for Joyce Marie Gordon
Joyce Marie (Russell) Gordon was born July 26, 1938, in Lampasas, Texas. She was the oldest of three children born to the late Elroy Russell and Earlie Mae (Gray) Russell, all of whom preceded her in death. (Children listed in birth order; Roy, Earl, Wayne.) Joyce departed this life on Dec. 20, 2013, at the age of 75 years, following a long illness at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis, Calif. In 1962, Joyce was united and spent the next 51 beautiful years of marriage to Gerald William Gordon. Six children were brought about from this union, Saeuntel Denise (Gordon) Allen, Stephen Drake Gordon, Richard Wayne Gordon, Judi Charmaine Gordon (deceased 1963), Monique (Gordon) Claxton, Scott Russell Gordon, Dawn Marie (Gordon) Wilkinson; grandchildren, Jennifer, Amber, Taylor, Andrew, Drake, Aishlyn and Amanda; great grandchild, Ericka; and a host of aunts, cousins and friends. Joyce graduated from Tucson High School in Tucson, Ariz., in 1957. Shortly after leaving high school, Joyce received her nursing training and was immediately employed by the Pima County Hospital in Tucson, Ariz. In the late 1970s, Joyce worked and eventually retired from David Grant Hospital as a medical clerk in the orthopedics department. Joyce accepted Christ into her life at an early age. She was a member of the Methodist Church and in the church choir in Tucson, Ariz. After her marriage to Gerald Gordon of USAF, she was able to travel to many places. She was a Brownie and Campfire Girls leader, Cub Scout leader, avid reader and cook. She was elected as the first female African-American on the Vacaville Unified School Board. Joyce was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, serving on the pastor’s aid ministry and was actively engaged in several other ministries within the church. Services will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church with viewing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013. Services start at 11 am. Joyce will be laid to rest at 2 p.m. at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery 5810 Midway Rd. Dixon, Calif. 95620.
