Obituary for John Robert Hays
John Robert Hays lost his 8 year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia on March 19, 2013 at the age of 68. He was born June 27, 1944 in Woodland to the late Jess and Ollie Hays. He is survived by his wife, Melinda, of Yuba City, his three children; John Hays of Dixon, Valerie Froman (Dennis), and James Hays (Deanna) of Woodland, two stepchildren; Brian Kepple (Ali) of Chico, and Alicia Casey of Willits, ten grandchildren; Cody Hays, Kyle Froman, Tyler Hays, Jacob Froman, Tanner Hays, Ruger Hays, Logan Hays, Tehya Casey, Brayden Kepple, and Kael Casey. John is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Ruth Austin, and brother, Carl Hays. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. John graduated from Dixon High School in 1962 where he excelled in multiple sports such as football, basketball, baseball and track and field. He began working for U.C. Davis in 1963 and moved to the U.C. Davis Hopland Research and Extension Center in 1973. John was involved in the Woolgrower’s Association, Redwood Empire Sheepdog Association, and the Cloverdale Ram Sale for many years. He retired from U.C. Davis in 2003 after 40 years of service and was able to enjoy his numerous hobbies including; hunting, fishing, camping, flying, and woodworking. John loved the saying, “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body. But rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming…WOW what a ride.” His sense of humor, endless energy and creativity will be missed by all. As requested by John, there will be no services held. He will be entered to rest at the Silveyville Cemetary in Dixon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that remembrances be sent to Sutter North Hospice, 400 Plumas Blvd. #115, Yuba City, California 95991, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
