Obituary for John Nicholas Gojkovich
John Nicholas Gojkovich of Dixon passed away peacefully February 6 at Davis Health Care. He was born on January 19, 1927, youngest of eight children born to Nikola and Nene Gojkovich who emigrated from Montenegro, Serbia to Bowie Arizona. At the age of two, his father packed up his family, stating, ³This was no place to raise children². So they sold the property and moved to Vacaville where he built a gas station along Highway 80. Nikola died eight years later leaving Nene to open their home to boarders. John¹s brother Spiro, started him in the cattle business when he was age 14. He leased pasture with his uncle around Vacaville and Berryessa. At age seventeen John left school and joined the Navy for two years to help fight in WWII. After he came back he finished school and bought his ranch in Dixon. He married Bonna Price and had one daughter. He had several careers selling among which was growing Christmas trees, working for the road department while raising sheep and cattle. Finally finding his niche in custom farming, some of his first employees were his nephews. To his disappointment labor laws changed so then he went the opposite direction and hired retired men, some worked with him well up into their 80s. He also increased his sheep herd and partnered with Gerald Wilbanks and fattened calves during the winter. He no longer was in the animal business but still farming with the help of the Johnstone family. He then met Mary Hollis who became not only his wife but his right hand person. They worked together in the contracting farming business for about eight years. They decided to retire and became snow birds staying in Blythe, California during the winter. They loved traveling, visiting their children and enjoying life. John¹s cousin, the late Gordon Gojkovich, not only held several elected positions in Solano County but was also the owner of the Dixon Tribune for several years.
