Obituary for Joe Sanchez Rivas
Joseph Natividad Sanchez Rivas, 94, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Friday, April 15 in Plano, TX. He was born in Fillmore, CA, on Dec. 18, 1921, to Manuel Rivas and Maria Nicanor Sanchez Rivas.
Joe married his adored wife, Jeannette Frances Kuhns, and stayed by her side for 61 years. Together they raised a large, vibrant family that stretches across the United States.
As an avid gardener and camper, Joe consumed hours outside. He camped in the California wilderness with his wife and children for countless years, and he tended to Papa's Garden with his grandchildren for many more years. Joe's and Jeannette's enthusiam for nature thrives within their family.
Not only has Joe's family lost their devoted patriarch, but the country has also lost a humble warrior. Joe served as a lineman in the U.S. Army and survived the infamous invasion of Normandy in WWII. He often reminisced about his time in the military, and his vivid stories fell on eager ears.
Joe was a loving and wise father, grandfather and friend. He lived a long and full life bursting with love, laughter, and music; his face was never without a contagious smile. That warm smile and his zest for life live on in the memories of all he touched with his radiant nature.
Our father, Joe, is preceded in death and joined in heaven and the afterlife by his beloved wife, Jeannette; his son, Jim; and his parents.
Dad is survived by his children, John Rivas, Jo Anna Frank (Ron), Joe Rivas (Rita), Janine Hatton (Tom), and Jerilynn Harris (Rick); his grandchildren, Rhiannon Lang, Deirdre Frank (Joseph Barton), Melissa Francisco (Israel), Ashley Montoya (Mark), Taleena Bennett (Tim), Joe Rivas (Cristi), Jenna Alba (Dart), Jacob Rivas, Mariah Burtness (Alec), Cole Harris (Sabrina), Savannah Harris, Johnny and Clinton Trahan; and his great-grandchildren, Jarret, Tyler, Danielle, Emily, Jadah, Elise, Christian, Aiden, Brielle, Seth, Autumn, Elias, Anthony, Nathan, Maxwell, and Aria.
A memorial service and viewing will be held Monday, May 2, from 4 to 7 p.m., at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville. Burial and memorial will be Tuesday, May 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
