Obituary for Jane Mitchell
Jane Seller Mitchell, 91, a resident of the Atria Carmichael Oaks retirement home since 2016 passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 30, 2018.
A daughter of the late M. Charles and Martha Peck Seller of Bloomfield, NJ, Jane was born September 22, 1926 in the nearby town of Montclair, NJ. After graduating in 1944 from Bloomfield High School, she served in clerical staff positions at northern NJ manufacturing and insurance companies before moving to San Jose, CA in the mid-1950s.
Jane met Stanley Herbert Mitchell in San Jose and married him there on December 18, 1955. They moved into a home in the adjacent city of Santa Clara, where Jane became the loving mother of four children and an energetic and dependable church and community volunteer. For many years she was also employed as a bank teller in Santa Clara.
Together with her husband, Jane enjoyed interacting with fellow travelers during their numerous journeys over the years throughout the United States and overseas. They likewise enjoyed making their Santa Clara home available as a bed-and-breakfast style accommodation for fellow members of a group that publicizes such opportunities on a nationwide basis. In 1994, Jane and Stanley moved as retirees to Leisure Town in Vacaville, CA, where they continued to devote countless hours to volunteer service efforts and activities, including Meals on Wheels, local food bank and the Leisure Town Association.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband Stanley in 2017 and by a son, Edward “Teddy” Charles Mitchell, in 1959. She is survived by daughters Karen Gallagher (husband Mark) and Nancy Mitchell (wife Phoebe Dineen); a son David Mitchell (wife Shelley); seven grandchildren: Mitchell Gallagher, Kyle Gallagher (fiancé Justine); Morgan Mitchell; Ryan Mitchell, Nicole Barnes, Megan Toombs (husband Brandon), and Emily Barnes; a sister, Judith Seller Russell (husband David), and a brother, M. Charles Seller, Jr. (wife Jane).
Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on November 3, 2018 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1100 Shasta Ave, San Jose, CA 95126.
