Obituary for Harold Lee Dykes
Harold passed away at the age of 75 in his Vacaville home this past Tuesday surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Kenvir, Kentucky in April of 1940 Harold also spent part of his early years in Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio.
Harold joined the United States Air Force in 1957. After training at Lackland and Shephard Air Force Bases in Texas he was transferred to Travis AFB as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. When Harold left the Air Force in 1961 he became employed at Basic Vegetable Products in Vacaville where he remained for 25 years, during which time he was promoted to Production Shift Supervisor. He also worked for a time at Hunt Wesson Foods before becoming a Bridge Operator for the California State D.O.T. (Cal Trans).
Harold enjoyed working on the bridges and always had stories to tell about how the different types of bridges operate and the sights he could see from the bridge house. He loved taking pictures and it was after his retirement in 2005 that he became more involved in photography. One of his favorite past times was getting in the truck and hitting the road with his cameras and his best pal Maximus Aerelius Agustus (otherwise known as “the dog”) by his side.
He’s survived by his wife of 55 years, Annie (Ortiz) Dykes; his children, Laura Lynn (Dykes) McQuaig and her husband Brian McQuaig, Sharon Lee Dykes, Christopher Allan Dykes and his wife Lisa Marie Blake, and Edith Irene Dykes; his grandchildren, Gregory Alan McQuaig and Laura Elizabeth McQuaig-Marsh and her husband Michael Timothy Marsh; his sisters Patsy (Dykes) Rigney and Marilyn Sue (Dykes) Brown and her husband Tony Brown.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Lee Dykes and Edith Irene (Bone) Dykes; and his sister Betty Lou (Dykes) Gregory.
A graveside service will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, California on January 14, 2016 at 1:00pm.
