Obituary for Guillermo "Memo" Velasco
“Memo" was born in Mexico City in 1918, the youngest of 9 children. At that time there were no cars on freeways, airplane travel, or televisions. He grew up poor but always had a sense that he could make something of himself and have a better life. The priest chaplain of his football team offered to sponsor him to come to the United States. He didn't think twice and within days, he and his nephew, Ralph were on their way to San Francisco. He often told us that he came to the United States with “$27 in his pocket.” He met our Mother soon after and....he lived happily ever after. We remember how" he always sung and whistled to himself every morning when he was getting ready for work. Due to his childhood poverty he had a gracious appreciation for the little things in life ... his bed ... shirts with buttons ... shoes that fit ... a good meal. Most of all he loved his wife, our mother, Connie, and knew that she was his biggest support and inspiration. He worked two jobs while going to school at night and earned a B.S. in Industrial Design. He was so proud of being a good provider for his family and one of his greatest joys each week was giving our Mother his paycheck. Since the passing of our Mother, Connie in 1999, our Father longed to be with her again. Although our hearts are breaking to see him pass on, we are happy and at peace knowing that he is with our Mother now in eternal peace and happiness. We love you Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Memo, Uncle, Brother, Devoted Friend. Dad leaves behind, his sons, David (Ana), Carlos (Marianne), daughters, Corinne (Scott), and Sandra (Dennis, deceased); his nephews Ralph Sr., Ralph Jr., and niece, Carlita; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Lynee, Melissa, Bryan, Andreya, Sarah, Jonathan, Thomas, Paul, Aurora, Martin, Antonio; and 12 great-grandchilden. Rosary and Visitation: Tuesday May 18, 5-8 pm at McCune Garden Chapel. Mass: Wednesday May 19, 11:00 am @ St. Mary's Catholic Church,
