Obituary for George Arthur Carty
George A. Carty passed away on April 5, 2017 at the age of 85, in Vacaville, CA. He was born in Boston, M A. to Irene and James F. Carty, the second of two children. He grew up in smaller cities around Boston, rooted for the Red Sox, and attended Lynn Classical High School, Lynn, MA.
At the age of 17, in January 1949, George enlisted in the U.S. Army where he completed Infantry training, followed by paratrooper training (jump school) and was awarded his Jump Wings. He was assigned to H Company, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, Fort Campbell, KY, and served with the Regiment in Korea from August 1950 to July 1951. During the Korean campaign, George earned his CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) and two battle stars on his Jump Wings.
While stationed at Fort Lewis, WA. in 1953, George met his future wife, Christina, whom he married in 1954 in Tacoma, WA. He completed a tour of duty in Germany from 1954 to 1955, then was discharged from the Army. However, he missed the military and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1959 and finished his career in this branch, retiring in August 1978. He served a one year tour in Vietnam from August 1966 to July 1967. After his retirement, he worked at DGMC, Travis AFB, CA. in civilian service and retired in 1996. He was a member of VFW, DAV, and the 187ARCT Assn (RAKKASANS).
George is survived by his brother James of Lynn, MA; wife, Christina and daughter, Carol Blandford of Vacaville; granddaughter, Angelia (Steve) Hall; great granddaughter Jessica Hacker; great grandson, Devin (Billie) DeMeyer; and six great-great grandchildren all of Caldwell, ID; and many nieces and nephews in ID, WA and MA.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 17 at 11:30 am at McCune Garden Chapel followed by services at 12:30 pm. A committal service at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, will be conducted at 2:30 pm. Services are under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main Street, Vacaville, CA. 95688.
