Obituary for Francis McNeil Sr.
Francis Daniel McNeil, Sr., who spent almost half of his life in public service including more than two decades combined in the United States Air Force and United States Army, passed away Aug. 23, 2017, at Travis Air Force Base with family at his side. He was 81. Mr. McNeil was born on March 6, 1936, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to parents Francis Xavier McNeil and Mary Kalin. He was the youngest of two children. Upon completion of high school, Mr. McNeil enlisted in the Army and served from November 1953 to November 1956. A little more than a year after being honorably discharged from the Army, Mr. McNeil enlisted in the Air Force and served in that branch of the military from July 1958 to January 1975. Following an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Mr. McNeil continued in his service to the public by gaining employment with the National Park Service, for which he worked for than 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mr. McNeil retired in the late 1990s and settled with wife Um in Fairfield- Suisun, Calif., not too far from Travis Air Force Base. Mr. McNeil was married twice. He and first wife, Linda, raised seven children together. He later married Um, with whom he had one child. Mr. McNeil was preceded in death by his parents Francis Xavier McNeil and Mary Kalin; sister, Winifred; son, Francis Daniel McNeil, Jr.; and grandson, Brent Frye. He is survived by wife, Um; children, Diane Rogers, Peggy Felkins, Florence McNeil, Kay McNeil-Costa, Monica Smeltzer, Kevin McNeil and Michael McNeil; step-children, Pontipar “Nong” Vongariyajitt, Roungratchanee “Banana” Boonyasub, and Porpun “Mo” Boonyasub; as well as 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services for Mr. McNeil are being held at 10 a.m., Sept. 25, 2017, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon, Calif. - Ben Aguirre, Jr. (Grandson)
