Fr. Michael Peter McFadden, affectionately known as Mickie to his loved ones and Fr. Mike to his community was born in 1937 in the small parish of Hollyhill, Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. Fr. Mike was the middle child of nine, raised by his loving parents Sean and Mary.
His academic talents were nurtured from a young age by Master Liam O'Dwyer, who recognized Fr. Mike's potential and provided guidance and support. A friendship that would last until Master O’Dwyer’s death. A scholarship awarded to Fr. Mike paved the way for his secondary education, a scholarship that was awarded to one student per school.
Fr. Mike's journey took him to All Hallows College in Dublin, where he discerned his calling to the priesthood and was ordained in 1961. He spent many years serving in California, yet his roots in Ireland remained dear to his heart. He would return home regularly, cherishing time with his family, reminiscing about the past, and celebrating life's joys and sorrows.
Beyond his spiritual calling, Fr. Mike was a man of remarkable talents. He was a skilled worker, with a particular love for cars and engines. Without formal training, he even wired homes in his local area during the electrification of the west of Ireland. His intellect and memory were truly remarkable, able to recall poems and rebuild engines of old cars with ease.
Throughout his life, Fr. Mike demonstrated this remarkable intelligence, gift for words, and a deep devotion to his faith and family. His presence was marked by simplicity, kindness, and a profound sense of purpose.
