Obituary for Evelyn Gallagher Markey
Evelyn Gallagher Markey, was born Aug. 18, 1921 in Oakland, California to George Gallagher and Mary McDonald Gallagher. After a very short illness she died Aug. 13, 2016, at Laurel Creek Health Care at Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield, California. Evelyn was very proud of her Catholic faith, her Irish heritage and her nursing career including her service to her country as a WII Army Air Corps RN. Evelyn is California born and raised in Oakland. She graduated from Providence College of Nursing in Feb. 1943. She joined the Army Air Corps after graduation. She was stationed at Pendleton Field, Oregon and Spokane, Washington with the Army Air Corps. She was deployed to London, England to set up the 125th General Hospital. After VE Day in July, 1945, she returned to the states. She was discharged from the army with the rank of First Lieutenant after VJ Day in 1946. She worked for 13 years at the VA hospital in Los Angeles, California, where she met Tom Markey. At that time, Tom was stationed in Okinawa as a civilian employee attached to a US Army Engineer group. Evelyn joined him in Okinawa where they married in 1960. Tom was transferred to Washington, D.C. They lived in Alexandria, Virginia for 18 years until Tom’s retirement. They moved back to Evelyn’s West Coast and settled in the English Hills of Vacaville for 20 years. Tom died in 1996 and Evelyn decided that she needed to move into town. She relocated to Paradise Valley Estates in Fairfield, California in 2003. Evelyn was a long time member of St Mary's Catholic Church. She volunteered in the food locker and with various parish organizations. She had a competitive spirit. Tennis was her sport of choice. She is survived by her sister-in-law; her nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her brother, Emmett; and her parents. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, followed by interment in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Evelyn would like you to send any donations to St Mary's Catholic Church in Vacaville.
