Obituary for Ernest (Ernie) Mike Gnos
Ernie, at the age of 85, passed away in Dixon, on Oct. 26. Ernie was born on Dec. 26, 1931, to Swiss immigrants, Joseph Gnos and Johanna Scheiber, in Thornton, CA, where he grew up on the family dairy. In 1943, the family dairy moved to Vaca Rancho in Elmira. Ernie attended elementary school in Elmira, and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1951. He was drafted by the Army soon after graduation and served in the Korean War, attending military cooking school and being a cook in the Army until his Honorable Discharge in 1954. Upon returning, Ernie was the recipient of a GI Bill and attended the two year Agricultural Education Program at UC Davis. During this time he started farming with his father and continued to farm in the Dixon area for over 61 years. In 1959 he met the love of his life, Rosemarie Kaelin. They married in Switzerland in 1960, and spent two months sightseeing and visiting their many relatives.Ernie was a hardworking and successful farmer. He belonged to many agricultural and local fraternal clubs and organizations. Two of the more notable organizations for which he was proud to serve were the Board of the Federal Land Bank and the Solano County Farm Bureau. Farming was Ernie’s greatest joy. In 1966, he was joined by his brother, Herman, in the farming operation. Together, they made a great team and were one of the area’s very successful and respected farmers, allowing the farming to continue today.Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Marie Bunch. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; sons, Hans and Victor of Dixon; grandchildren, Chase Gnos of Modesto, and Victoria Gnos of Davis; brothers, Joe and Herman (Lucy) Gnos of Dixon; sisters, Greda Hebrard of Napa and JoAn Giannoni of Dixon; numerous nieces and nephews.A Rosary will be held at the Milton Carpenter Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 7 p,.m. Internment will be held for Ernie at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, on Nov. 14, at 11:30 a.m. A Celebration of life following the services will be held at the Olde Vets Hall in Dixon.The family requests that in lieu of flowers that a contribution, in memory of Ernie, be made to your favorite charity.
