Ernie, at the age of 85, passed away in Dixon, on Oct. 26. Ernie was born on Dec. 26, 1931, to Swiss immigrants, Joseph Gnos and Johanna Scheiber, in Thornton, CA, where he grew up on the family dairy. In 1943, the family dairy moved to Vaca Rancho in Elmira. Ernie attended elementary school in Elmira, and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1951. He was drafted by the Army soon after graduation and served in the Korean War, attending military cooking school and being a cook in the Army until his Honorable Discharge in 1954.
