Obituary for Edward Willis Daniels, Sr
Edward Willis Daniels, Sr, 81, of Vacaville, passed away on March 20, peacefully in his sleep. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 29, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Vacaville. Pastor John Black will officiate. Internment will take place at 2 p.m., Monday April 1, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCune Garden Chapel. Edward was born in Cleveland Ohio on July 13, 1931. He graduated from East Technical High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949 and served one tour of duty as an Aircraft Electrical Mechanic. After spending one year with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier he decided to enlist, again, in the United States Air Force. Serving in the Continental United States, Europe, Asia, Newfoundland, Greenland and Caribbean from 1954 to 1977, he achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, received three Air Force Commendation Medals and one Meritorious Service Award while he held positions from Aircraft Mechanic/Electrical Maintenance Instructor, Electrical Shop Supervisor and Accessory Repair Superintendent. In 1971 he received a Temporary Permissive Assignment from the Air Force to Ramey Elementary School, Ramey Air Force Base, allowing him to complete his student teaching. After many years of attending college at night and taking extension courses, Edward received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Inter American University, San German, Puerto Rico in 1973 and continued on to receive a Master of Arts Degree in Education Administration from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. 1974 to 1975, he worked the night shift for the Air Force and held a full-time teaching position at the Myrtle Street School in Springfield, Massachusetts. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a 4, 5 and 6 combination classroom teacher at the Farragut Elementary School, Vallejo, from 1977 to 1980. He joined the Travis Unified School District in 1980 and worked as a Resource Specialist and Special Education Department Chairman at the Golden West Intermediate School until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, he continued to work as an Adjunct Professor for Chapman University and University Supervisor for the Chapman University Student Teacher Program. Edward was married to Bernice Townsend on March 8, 1956; they were married 57 years. He enjoyed handball, swimming, reading and working with youth. Over the years, he was actively involved in Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Solano County; Tri-City NAACP; The Solano County Integration Council; Deacon Emeritus at Antioch Progressive Baptist Church; Inc; a 33rd Degree Mason and member of the Stanley Y. Beverley Masonic Lodge; Past Worshipful Master of Wardens and Craft, St Mark Lodge #115; Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a founding member and Deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church. Edward is survived by his devoted wife, Bernice Daniels; his son, Edward Willis Daniels, Jr, and his wife, Patricia of Lacey Washington; his daughter, Milicent Daniels- Chamble and her husband, John Chamble of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; sister, Beverly Graves of Los Angeles; his sister-in-law, Eula Wilson of Cleveland, Ohio; granddaughters, Carissa, Shannon, Andrea, Samara, Amirah, Aliyah and Davina; great-grandson, Thomas (TJ) and a host of nieces and nephews. Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Daniels, Sr, Daisy Daniels and Sara Elizabeth Daniels; his brothers, Melvin Daniels, Sr, Walter Daniels, Jr. and Mitchell Wilson and a sister, Anne Marie Parker.
