Obituary for Dr. Peter Lee Blake

Peter, 88, died peacefully with his wife and sister-in-law at his side on March 22, 2025. He was born Pierre Leopold Bluwstein on November 18, 1936, in Antwerp, Belgium, and embarked on an extraordinary journey of resilience and hope. He was the treasured son of Felix R. and Gerda A. Bluwstein, who faced unimaginable challenges as Jewish parents during a tumultuous time in history. At just four years old, Peter's parents, with the support of the Catholic Church, made a courageous decision to place him in the care of a family in Obernai, France, ensuring his safety from the Nazi invasion. His parents endured the harrowing experience of being separated in different concentration camps throughout World War II, only to be reunited as a family and return to Belgium at war's end when Peter was nine. When Peter turned eleven, the family took a bold step, moving to the United States and adopting the surname Blake. They began their new life in Long Island, New York, before relocating to Los Angeles when Peter was twelve.

Peter excelled academically, graduating from high school in LA and pursuing higher education at USC, where he played tennis and water polo, all while earning his doctorate in 1960. Following his achievement in optometry, he proudly served in the Air Force at Travis AFB for three years, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant.

In Vacaville, Peter established a thriving optometric private practice that flourished for over four decades. He cared deeply about his patients earning him the adoration of countless people, many of whom became lifelong friends. His commitment to the community was evident through his leadership roles as President of the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis. An avid golfer, he spent many joyful hours at the Green Valley Golf Course. He was actively involved with the Val Players in the 1970s sharing his love of performing and bringing people together.

Peter enjoyed reading and gardening, but his most striking quality was his immense love of people. Social by nature, he had a kind laugh that could light up a room and a generosity of spirit that left an impression on everyone he met. He was a gifted and enthusiastic storyteller, known for spinning elaborate and completely fabricated tall tales that delighted listeners. His pulled countless pranks and always relished in telling made-up stories, often hilariously unbelievable, but told with such charm and conviction that people were enthralled, eager for the next one. And always, Peter laughed the hardest at his own jokes. He had a way of making people feel their best selves when he was around.

Peter’s heart was fullest when spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as keeping up with them via Facetime from afar. He loved family gatherings, playing tennis, and riding horses. Some of his happiest memories were made traveling with his wife, Maureen, whom he affectionately called “Little Mo”, especially during their times at his favorite place on the beach in Moss Landing. He seemed most relaxed watching the sunset and putting together elaborate puzzles of up to 6,000 pieces.

Peter's legacy lives on through his cherished wife of 49.5 years, Maureen Blake, and their remarkable children: daughter Kimberly of San Diego, son Michael (and wife Kelly) of Oakland, and daughter Jennifer Engisch of Switzerland. He adored his five grandchildren: Emily, Walker, Keith, Ivy, and Evinn, who were the light of his life.

Peter will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon on June 5 at 1:30pm. Memorial contributions may be made to The Lion’s Club (www.lionsevefoudation.com) to supply glasses for the needy. Friends may leave comments on the McCune Tribute Wall at McCunechapel.com. Condolences may be sent to The Blake Family, P.O. Box 6749, Vacaville, CA 95696.
