Obituary for Donald C. Shortridge
Master Sergeant Donald C. Shortridge died on January 17, 2018, at David Grant Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, California.
Donald was born in San Francisco, California on October 2, 1937, the second son of Winnifred Clara Raymond and Cleophus Donald Shortridge, Jr. He lived in San Francisco until he graduated from Mission High School in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. At the time of his enlistment, he had been a member of the California National Guard. He completed his Air Force basic training in 1956 and became a jet engine mechanic. Throughout his military career, he sought ever-increasing leadership and management responsibilities. He retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in 1982 after 26 years of service.
Among the awards and medals Don received were: the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Army Good Conduct Medal with 1 Bronze Loop; the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters; the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters.
In 1983, Don began a new career at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in Vallejo, California. He was accepted into the Shipyard’s apprentice program. Upon his completion of that program, he became a nuclear marine machinist. He worked on nuclear submarines, again, with increasing levels of responsibility and management, until the Shipyard closed in 1996.
Don is survived by his wife, Judge Ramona J. Garrett-Shortridge (Ret.). In 1996, Don was the Chairman of his wife’s successful political campaign to retain her judgeship.
Don worked briefly as a civilian on aircraft engines again at Travis Air Force Base, California, for the Raytheon Company.
In 1997, Don began working as a volunteer teaching assistant at Elm Elementary School in Vacaville, California. He assisted-teaching daily for 6 years at Elm before moving on to help at other Northern California schools for many years.
Don loved horses and became a member of the Northern California Black Horsemen’s Association, based in Oakland, California. He ultimately became the Chairperson of that organization.
Don also loved music and attended the yearly Monterey Jazz Festival and the Monterey Blues Festival with his family.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his brothers, Thomas Shortridge, Charles Shortridge, Michael Shortridge, Glenn Ansar, and Richard Green; his sisters, Kathleen Shortridge and Louise Green.
His surviving children are Donald C. Shortridge, Jr. (spouse Angela Shortridge), Monica Brogdon, and Nichelle Garrett.
Surviving grandchildren are Donnie Jackson, Valaryee Mitchell, Tyree Watkins, Jordan Garrett-Williams, LaRyecia Green, Darshei’ Trent, Keon Sample, Aaron Shortridge, Ashleigh Shortridge, Charles Brogdon, and Challyce Brogdon.
Don is survived by 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother Robert Shortridge; his daughter Estella Lynn; his son Kevin Shortridge; and his great-granddaughter Aniyah Lovelace.
A viewing will take place on January 31, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St. Vacaville, CA 95688.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at McCune Garden Chapel.
A military ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m., at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Read, Dixon, California, 95620.
