Obituary for Dennis Vaughn McCord
Dennis Vaughn McCord passed away on Sunday after a long battle with his health. Throughout his struggle he served as a constant inspiration to family, friends, and strangers alike. His kindness, courage, and wonderful outlook on life was, and always shall be, remembered.
Born in Susanville with his earliest years fondly remembered in Booneville, Dennis moved to Vacaville with his parents and sister when he was just 13. He graduated with honors from Vacaville High School. While there, he played football; a sport he loved for the rest of his days. After earning a degree from Sacramento State University, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee, serving in Vietnam. He continued his service in the Navy Reserves for a number of years. The skills he learned in the service led to a long-lasting career with Solano County Road Department, which he retired from in 1999 as Transportation Superintendent. He also served as a Community Services Commissioner for eight years and was known and loved in community theatre for his portrayals of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, King Charlemagne in Pippin, Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and many more. His rich, baritone singing voice brought many-a-crowd to their feet in applause.
Dennis is survived by the love of his life, Carol, and his five children: Kimberly (Alex) Bondarenko, Sean McCord, Steve (Debbie) Lopez, Scott Lopez, Jason Lopez and their families. He is also survived by his mother, Madeline McCord, sister, Sandy (Frank) DiModica and his many grandchildren: Trevor, Chris, Brittany, Mia, Alexis, Maggie, Brooke, Brandon, Michael, Mason, Katherine and Peyton.
A celebration of life open to family and friends will be held at McCune Garden Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 20th at 11am, followed by interment at 1:30pm in Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
