Obituary for Darrell D. Green
On May18th, 2016, Darrell D. Green, Colonel, USAF (Retired) departed on his final flight. Darrell fought a valiant fight against a relentless disease and exemplified grace to the end.
He was born in Salt Lake City and grew up in Bountiful, UT. He graduated from Bountiful High, and earned a BS in Geography from the U of Utah. He also earned a MS in Psychology, from the U of N. CO; a MS in Public Admin, from Golden State U; as well as one from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Wash DC. Darrell was a decorated pilot and proudly served in the Air Force for 30 years, retiring in 1994. He enlisted at 17 and served 4 years before getting out and going to college on the GI bill/ROTC and reentered the AF as a 2Lt, able to do what he'd always dreamed of, fly airplanes. Over his career, he flew a variety of planes to included the T-37,
T-38, B-57G, C-141, and C-5. In a long and distinguished career, Darrell rose to the rank of Colonel. A few highlights of his AF career included being awarded the UPT Officer's Training Award for the class of 69-03; serving in Vietnam, at the White House under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He was the 75th Sq Cmdr, the Deputy Base Cmdr and the 22nd AF/ADO at Travis AFB; the US Transportation Command Chief of Staff, at Scott AFB and the AMC Sq Cmdr at Elmendorf AFB.
After retiring from the Air Force, Darrell spent the next 20+ years working as an IT consulting/recruiting executive. He had a passion for gardening, a love he's passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Darrell is preceded in death by his mother, Nora Elaine (Spence) Green and his father, Donald Benton Green.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lou; his daughter, Andrea; son, Preston & wife, Susan; and 5 amazing grandchildren, Connor, Libby, Riley, Ali, and Ajax ... don't tell the others, but they're all his favorite; his sister, Shirlynn Stubblefield; brother, Donald Rich Green; his Uncle Lynn Spence; cousins, Georgia York, and Joe Nieman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Per Darrell's wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the NorthBay Hospice and Bereavement, 4520 Business Center Drive, Fairfield, CA 94594 or the Memorial and Honor Program, Huntsman Cancer Foundation, 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City, UT, 84108.
The family wishes to thank the David Grant Medical Ctr, Oncology and Interventional Radiology (IR) Dept and NorthBay Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness. We would also like to thank all those who've sent their well wishes and testimonies to Darrell over these difficult months. Your kind thoughts, sharing of stories, generous gestures and prayers have truly been appreciated by Darrell and his family.
