Obituary for Claudia Gae Nickum
Claudia Gae Nickum(Prescott) passed away peacefully on December 9 th , 2020 in Vacaville at the age of 84. She was born October 12, 1936 in Napa California to the late Tom and Marie Prescott.
Claudia graduated from Napa High School in 1954, and in 1956 graduated from Napa College with her Associates Arts Degree. She made many life long friends from her years in Napa, who stayed close to her until the end. After leaving Napa College she went to work for Pacific Bell Telephone Company in Napa and worked there until 1963 when she married her husband Robert Nickum. Upon marrying Robert, they made their home in Dixon where they raised their three children.
Robert and Claudia enjoyed traveling and spending time with Claudia’s family at their cabin in Pine Grove. Claudia spent these years raising her children and volunteering her time to Soroptimist International, Enchanted Hills and M.A.D.D. Claudia also graciously opened her home to high school aged AFS students that studied at Dixon High School. She also started a restaurant in Dixon, named The Flytrap, hiring many local high school kids and local professionals to work for her. Claudia enjoyed playing tennis with various women’s groups in the local area. Claudia’s Catholic faith was a big part of her life and she was a weekly parishioner at St. Peter’s Church in Dixon.
After twenty-three years of marriage Claudia and Robert divorced, and she would soon thereafter move to Woodland to be closer to her daughter who was raising a young family at the time. She would still find time to open her home to AFS Students, as well as becoming a Red Cross Volunteer. She spent time helping those impacted by natural disasters in Mississippi, Louisiana and Southern California.
Surviving family members include her brother Tom Prescott, sister in law Peggy Prescott and nephew Tony Prescott all of Napa. Her sister Georgia Prescott and her partner Donna Menzies. Her three children David Nickum(Lisa), Amy Pretti(Michael) and Matthew Nickum. She also has grandchildren- Jordan, Blake, Tyler, Ali, Trevor, Dylan, Matthew, Victoria, Abby and Gracie. She leaves behind three great grandchildren.
Claudia (Nani to her grandchildren), left a strong legacy for her family to follow of giving of yourself and to always think of others first. She made a significant impact on those who were surrounded by her, and laid a foundation for her family to follow. She will be deeply missed.
Due to the pandemic Claudia was peacefully put to rest during a private burial on December 17th at the Silveyville Cemetery in Dixon.
