Obituary for Catherine Agnes Wood
Catherine Agnes Wood passed from this world on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018 at NorthBay Medical Center, Fairfield, California. Catherine was born July 26, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, the first child of Edith Geyer and Frank Nelson. Her early years were spent in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn and throughout her life she would recount tales of a childhood playing games on the stoops, going to nickel movies and generally enjoying the vibrant city life. She would always identify herself as a New Yorker, despite many years living away from her beloved city. Catherine graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1947 and went on to a successful career in banking. Subsequently, she was employed at the law firm, Dewey, Ballentine, Bushby, Palmer and Wood (no relation) at 40 Wall Street. She met her husband, Cornelius Wood, on New Year's Eve 1958 and together they moved to Orlando, Florida in 1959. Cornelius' service in the Air Force took them to Bangor, Maine, in 1960 and it was there that Catherine gave birth to her two children, Veronica Schauer and Regina Lockwood. In 1966 Cornelius was transferred to Travis Air Force Base and the family moved to Fairfield, California, where Catherine resided until her passing 52 years later. Catherine served in the Mother's Guild of Holy Spirit School and was a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America. Catherine had a huge personality and tremendous verbal skills. She remained feisty and articulate to the very end. Catherine is survived by her husband; two daughters; and grandchildren, Thomas, Katherine and Victoria Schauer and Melia and Hunter Lockwood. Viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main St., Vacaville, California. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, at Holy Spirit Church, 1070 N. Texas St., Fairfield, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Spirit School, 1050 N. Texas St., Fairfield, CA 94533.
