Obituary for Catalino "Nick" Toledo Nicolas Jr.
Catalino “Nick” Nicolas, 81, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of August 14, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a brave battle against lung cancer… in the end his heart gave out. Nick met the love of his life, Herminia, in 1952 while working for the Metropolitan Water District of Manila. He was hesitant to approach Herminia at first because his future father-in-law was his boss. Nick enlisted in the United States Navy on his 22nd birthday in 1957. He proudly served his country for 24 years, seeing action during the Vietnam War and achieving the rank of Chief Storekeeper. Nick married Herminia in December of 1960 and began their amazing life journey together. After his discharge from the Navy, Nick began his second career dedicating an additional 24 years to the United States Postal Service in Vacaville. He made many lifelong friends among his co-workers and those families he met on his route. Nick had one of the few “walking” routes and looked forward to his daily talks with everyone. In retirement, Nick enjoyed weekly trips to Cache Creek where he played his favorite penny slots, watched John Wayne war movies, challenged himself on Final Jeopardy, and traveled to Las Vegas to see the shows. Nick could also be seen taking his daily walks down Alamo Drive to Peabody Road, with an occasional detour at Burger King. Nick became a Giants fan later in life, much to the ire of his Dodgers loving wife and daughters. To his daughters Michelle and Marcia, he instilled a sense of pride, respect and gratitude for everything he did for them. Education was important to him, so was very proud when they both graduated from UC Davis. Growing up, he ensured that their every need was met; family came first. Nick even endured several rock concerts and baseball games just to make his daughters happy. He did that and more. To his wife Herminia, Nick was her “rock.” They were inseparable. Nick’s life mission was to protect Herminia from any hardship. He accomplished that. Herminia enjoyed seeing Nick happy, so she learned to cook all the delicious Filipino dishes just the way Nick liked it. Their life together was filled with much love and laughter. Nick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Herminia; daughter Michelle (Martin) Chavez, daughter Marcia, granddaughter Leah, sister Delfina, brother Ramon (Amy), brother Gabriel (Aida), sister Cynthia, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Catalino, Sr. of Manila, Philippines. Nick was a man of strong character and integrity, the greatest father anyone could ask for, and faithful friend to so many people throughout the years. Nick was a quiet man and a strong family man, but he will be remembered most for his generous spirit and his dimpled smile. Services include a Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, August 22 at 10:30 followed by burial at The Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
