Funeral services will be in Vacaville, with internment in Bakersfield
We are sad to report the passing of Bertha Bishop on October 28, 2011. Bertha was a resident of Vacaville after moving there 8 years ago to live with her son.
The 93-year-old WWII widow was born at Pickins, Oklahoma, to Richard Wallace Shields, and Myrtle Ola (Reid) Shields in 1917. She moved to Bakersfield, CA around 1947 and lived there till 2003.
Bertha was the first in her family to finish High School, having had to work her way through it. After graduating Bertha worked at an ammunition plant till her first husband fell in WWII. In the years that followed she remarried twice. She operated her own caf, has been a beautician, bookkeeper, baker, and finally a florist. Her number one job was being mother to the 5 children she raised. Her Christian faith was the most important thing in her life along with her kids.
Bertha was loved by everyone who met her. She will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her son, Leonard Peninger, her husbands, Paul Peninger, Edgar Buxton, and Readus Bishop, as well as her brothers James and Marvin Shields. Shes survived by her children, Janice Trachier of Waskom, TX, Edgar Buxton of Ballinger, TX, Gerald Buxton of Vacaville, CA, Donald Buxton of Bakersfield, CA, as well as 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held for Bertha Bishop at 11:00am, on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, in the chapel at McCune Garden Chapel, in Vacaville. Graveside services will be at, 11:00am, Tuesday November 8, 2011 in the Greenlawn Cemetery on River Blvd, in Bakersfield, where she will be laid to rest next to her son Leonard Peninger.
Viewing for family will be held at 5-8pm on Tuesday, Nov 1, 2011 at McCune in Vacaville, and 4-7pm on Monday, Nov 7, 2011 at Greenlawn Cemetery on River Blvd, in Bakersfield.
