Obituary for Beatrice "Bea" Theresa Fairfield
Beatrice “Bea” Theresa Fairfield, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on 1/10/21 in Dixon CA at the age of 94. Bea was a lifelong resident of Dixon.
Bea overcame some early hardships, surviving polio as a teenager. As the eldest of five children, Bea helped her mother Cecelia raise her younger siblings after the sudden death of her father when she was 14. After graduating from Dixon High School in 1944, Bea worked at Travis Air Force Base during the remainder of WWII.
Her stellar work at Travis led to a position with the Dixon Unified School District, where she worked throughout the 1950’s.
In the 1960’s she served as both Treasurer of Dixon and assistant City Clerk. In the 1970’s and 1980’s she was the City Clerk and City Treasurer. She worked in the old City Hall, then the temporary trailer during construction of the new City Hall, and finally in the current City Hall.
As City Clerk in those pre-computer days, everything was “by-hand” including all City billings to every household. Bea handled requests for anything related to the City, be it development, business licenses, dog licenses, etc. She was well loved at the city where the phrase, ”Ask Bea” was common to City employees as she always seemed to know the answers. For years, she attended every City Council meeting and every planning commission meeting to take minutes and be a critical reference to rules, past proceedings, and decisions.
During elections, she would personally deliver the Dixon ballots to the county seat in Fairfield on election night. Also, she held a police badge as a “matron” to assist officers when escorting arrested women.
When Bea retired from the city in 1988, the city gave her a plaque with the words “ Bea Fairfield’s love and loyalty to the City of Dixon has brought respect and meaning to the title of “Public Servant.”
Bea and Bill were married in April, 1947, celebrating 73+ years of marriage.
They were a team through life, raising two children, traveling the world, and serving as civil servants. Bill spent 28 years with the Dixon Fire Department, 26 as Fire Chief. Bea’s knowledge of every name and address in the city helped when an emergency call would come over the radio. As Bill rushed out the door, Bea would know exactly where he should go.
Besides their various personal trips and cruises, much of their world travel centered around the popular local group the Dixon Firehouse Philharmonics. With Bill as drummer and co-founder, the band made numerous trips to Hawaii, Europe, and various locales. These trips always involved many community members, and were very enjoyable.
Bea loved her family, and looked forward to gatherings for holidays and special occasions. Always positive, smiling, and “on the go,” she enjoyed organizing and getting things accomplished.
Bea is survived by her husband Bill, son Bill, Jr. (Linda), Daughter Melanie (Rick), 6 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all.
A Mass at St Peters Church will be held on Wednesday 12pm in the socially- distanced outdoor tents. Internment will be private. Due to current Covid restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later time.
