Obituary for Arthur Donald "Rusty" Hazelton
T/SGT Arthur Donald (Rusty) Hazelton passed away on January 13, 2018 at David Grant Medical
Center. He was born in Spring Valley, Minnesota on April 9, 1941, the son of Donald and Katherine
Hazelton. He grew up in El Dorado Springs Missouri. He graduated from Nevada High School where he
was known as Rusty (because of his carrot-red hair) in 1959. He joined the United States Air Force in
January of 1961, and married Mary Stevenson in September of that year. After serving two years in
bases at New Jersey, Arkansas and Missouri, Airman Hazelton was stationed at Travis AFB, California.
Later he was stationed at Yakota AFB, Japan. After returning to Travis, Technical Sergeant Hazelton was
awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service as Noncommissioned Officer in
Charge, Support Equipment Branch Rail Shop and 780 Section Chief 602d Organizational Maintenance
Squadron until July, 1978; as well as, various other medals and awards.
In his leisure time, Rusty would gold-mine with some of his friends. His family also often
accompanied him, panning along the American and Sacramento River.
Rusty’s other passion was car-racing. He drove a stock car (no.57) at Napa-Vallejo Speed-Way,
Roseville and Petaluma California. Later he worked on stock cars as a partial owner of a racecar shop.
T/SGT Hazelton retired from the Air Force in February, 1982. In 1986 he opened his own tool
store in Vacaville. After owning two successful stores in Vacaville and fostering at least 25 children for
the State of California in a period of 15 years, Rusty and his wife sold their home and moved back to
Missouri to care for their aging parents. Rusty opened another tool store along-side his father, Donald.
He and his wife were also foster parents for the State of Missouri. After the death of his father the
couple returned to the Bay Area in 2008. They bought a house in Suisun City, California where they
resided until his death at age 76.
T/SGT Hazelton is survived by his wife, Mary of 56 years, three children, Amy, Rhonda and
Clifford, five grandchildren, Lisa, Daniel, Tatajana, Shae, and Mikala, and four great-grandchildren. He is
dearly loved and will be forever missed.
