Obituary for Andrew John Derflinger
Andrew John Derflinger passed away in Vacaville on December 29, 2016 at the age of 70 from a sudden illness. Andrew, or Andy as he is affectionately known, was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Derflinger. He is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 47 years, who he met while he was a Chicago Police Officer. They were married in Chicago on March 14, 1970. Andy is lovingly remembered by his mother, Lorraine Minwegen of Chicago; brother, Tim (Tina); sisters, Joan, Laura (Chuck) and Mary (Bob); daughter, Michelle Derflinger-Cornejo; son, David Derflinger and his wife Tiffany as well as 6 grandchildren, Ben, Brandon, Cedric, Heather, Alexus and Allison. Andy was born in Chicago, IL on April 11, 1946. He went to Seminary but quit in 1964 to join the Navy where he received his GED. Andy had a distinguished military career serving in the Navy on the USS Forrestal (when it blew up) he cruised the world and did a tour in Vietnam. He was commander of the Disable American Veterans (DAV) and commander of the Honor Guard for the National Cemetery in Dixon. Throughout Andy’s life he had passion to serve and protect. For 15 years, Andy was a reserve Deputy Sheriff for Solano County and a reserve for the Alameda County Search and Rescue Dive Team, an EMT and also served in the Vacaville Fire Protection District. Andy worked for PG&E for 30 years before retiring in 2004. He was very proud of his Cherokee heritage and had a love for the outdoors. Andy was an avid scuba diver, snow skier and camper. He also had a passion for hunting and traveling. A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 5th from 10am to 11am, with a rosary at 10:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following at 11am both at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1791 Marshall Rd., Vacaville. Burial with military honors will be held at 1pm at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon.
