Obituary for Alfred Henry Bekebrede Jr.
Alfred Henry Bekebrede, Jr., the son of Alfred Henry Bekebrede, Sr. and Mary Gertrude Prout was born on December 1, 1932 in rural Wyoming, several miles outside of Gillette. Alfred grew up close to Aurora, Oregon, and then for more than 40 years he resided in Davis, CA. However, he was truly a citizen of the world. After rising in the ranks to Lt. Col in the United States Air Force, in 1967 he became a commercial airline Pilot for Pan American Airways, and later, United Airlines. Over the course of his aviation career, he was stationed all over the United States from Hawaii to New York and flew to 6 out of 7 continents and just about everywhere in between. In addition to his love of travel, Alfred was extraordinarily creative and relished working with his hands, creating, painting, and inventing solutions to problems. As part of his plan to walk at least four miles per day, Alfred visited all the thrift stores around Davis and enjoyed listening to books on tape. He rarely left a thrift store empty-handed and his collection of books on tape was unparalleled by many libraries. He married twice, had six children, and made friends all over the world. Known by friends as Big Al, he loved his family fiercely and made sure that none of his children ever doubted that. He truly enjoyed helping family, friends, and even strangers in need and never hesitated to go to extreme lengths on their behalf. Alfred passed peacefully on Saturday, July 10, and was surrounded by loving family during his final days and hours. He is survived by his widow, Pauline Bekebrede and five of his adult children and their spouses: Holly and Paul Hossack of Boulder Creek, CA; Heidi Bekebrede and George Grant of Davis, CA; Eric and Sandy Bekebrede of Wilsonville, OR; Penny and Matt Bussone of Rocklin, CA; Julie and Dan Roll of Oakland, CA; 11 grandchildren (Logan, Kendal, Lillian, Ruby, Vendela, Alaina, Merenne, Cristina, Sophia, Chasis and Riley); and one great grandson (Owen). He was preceded in death by one son, Alec as well as his first wife, Nancy. A memorial service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, September 14 at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home at 569 North First Street, Dixon, CA. If you wish to attend, please call or text Penny (916) 826-1616 to RSVP. Alfred will be laid to rest the following day at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery during a private ceremony with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made SPCA Yolo County Thrift Store in Davis, CA.
